CHANDIGARH: The Chief of Air Staff SP Tyagi on Friday performed two para-jumps from an altitude of 5,000 feet. The Air Chief Marshal was practicing for the March 7 event when President APJ Abdul Kalam will review the IAF fleet at Chandigarh Air Force Station. Another 74 air warriors would join the Air Chief in the para-jump to mark 75 years of IAF's existence, this being the platinum jubilee year.
With the rehearsals for the President's Fleet Review, the largest event to mark the platinum jubilee celebrations, on at full swing at the air force station here, the air chief took time off his schedule to fly down here on Friday and attempt the practice jumps.
Air Chief Marshal Tyagi is the first IAF chief to have earned his 'Para wings' while holding office of Chief of Air Staff. He had completed the Para syllabus on Air Force Day on October 8 in 2005, when he carried out his fifth and final syllabus Para jump at the Hindon air base. He had carried out the jumps in 2005 using a ram air parachute from a Mi-17 helicopter from a height of 4000 ft in about four minutes from exit to touch down. Tyagi had completed his Para-jump syllabus over 15 days and had taken to the sport only in 2004. With that jump in 2005, the Air Chief Marshal set an example for younger officers, inspiring them to maintain highest standards of fitness and mental alertness till the end of their careers. Air Chief Marshal Tyagi will retire from service at the end of this month and the Para-jump on March 7 could be his last while in service.
